spiral fluted tap Precautions for processing

The spiral fluted tap is a tap suitable for stop-hole machining because the chips are discharged to the shank side by the action of a twisted groove.
However, it is also a tap that is prone to trouble where chips get entangled in the tap, or the tap chipping or breaks due to chewed chips, so the following precautions are required.

(1) Drill a large pilot hole within the standard.

Not limited to spiral fluted tap , the pilot hole of the tapping process should be made larger within the standard.
The amount of chips is reduced and trouble is reduced.
The strength of the internal thread is fine as long as it is within the standard.
You can check the tolerance of the pilot hole diameter in the catalog and on the website.

(2) Cutting speed should not be too fast or too slow.

The shape of the chip in the spiral fluted tap depends on the characteristics of the material and the cutting speed.
Compact chips with small curls drain smoothly and are not easy to get tangled.
For example, when machining mild steel such as SS400, the recommended cutting speed is 8~13m/min.
If you process at a depth of 5 m or less or 15 m or more, the chips will curl up and become entangled easily.
The appropriate cutting speed varies depending on the type of tap and the material to be cut, so please check the catalog.

(3) In general, the depth that can be processed is up to 2D.

The depth that can be processed with the spiral fluted tap is generally up to 2D (twice the outer diameter of the tap).
In the case of M10 taps, if the effective thread length exceeds 20 mm, it becomes a "deep hole", and various problems are likely to occur.
For machining deep holes larger than 2D, we recommend a deep hole spiral fluted tap or chip-free forming tap .

(4) If you tap too far, the internal thread will be enlarged.

The tap processes the screw by advancing one pitch in one rotation.
In the case of machines or manual processes where the rotation and feed are not synchronized, internal thread expansion occurs when the rotation and feed of the tap are out of balance.
spiral fluted tap is a tap that is particularly prone to over-advancement due to its sharpness and mechanism for discharging chips to the shank side, so be careful.
When internal thread enlargement occurs, check whether the material and the tap specifications match, and whether the machine is processed by pushing.
