Tool selection for thread mill [Female thread]
In order to select a tool to process internal threads with a thread mill, follow these steps:
・Click here to select a thread mill for machining external threads.
・Click here for selection of thread mills for pipe screws
Step (1) Check the name, pitch, and thread length of the screw to be processed.
Step (2) Check the workpiece material.
Tip
ThreadPro is a program creation tool for OSG's thread mills. It greatly reduces the time and effort required to prepare the thread mill for processing.
What you can do with ThreadPro
- Creation of processing programs for thread mills
・Thread mill tool selection
・ Refer to the approximate processing time
In preparation for use in other processes, you can use the thread mill more widely by keeping the following points in mind.
(1) Check the name, pitch, and thread length of the internal thread to be processed.
Determine how much tool diameter and blade length (neck length) of the thread mill is required.
・Tool diameter
One of the features of the thread mill is that it is possible to process screws of different names at the same pitch.
The tool diameter must be smaller than the pilot hole diameter of the screw to be machined.
It is desirable to have a certain amount of margin in consideration of the space for chip discharge.
* This does not apply to some types that perform pilot holes and threads at the same time.
In the OSG catalog, the following is described for ease of understanding.
chip-type
In the tool selection table, there is a list of holder and insert combinations for each pitch.
The range of names that can be processed in that combination is described.
Metric Thread
Unified Threads
48 mountain ~ 12 mountain combination and processing range: 12 mountain ~ 4 mountain combination and processing range
Solid Type
The minimum machining diameter that the tool can process (larger nominal screws can be machined)
for pipesfor screws
Applicable processing size (for pipes, the combination of nominal and pitch is fixed)
・ Blade length / neck length
The thread length that can be processed is as follows, taking into account the margin at each thread mill.
Solid type: Blade length - 2 pitches
Tip type - Neck length - 2 pitch
(2) Check the workpiece material.
Determine whether the tool is suitable for the material you want to process.
For the solid type, there is a list of materials to be applied at the bottom of the catalog page.
Solid-type thread mill for high-efficiency machining of a wide range of materials
・ AT-1
Thread mill with bottom blade for high-hardness steel for simultaneous drilling and threading for drilling and threading for a hardness of 60HRC
・ AT-2
High-efficiency thread mill with bottom blade for non-ferrous metals that enables machining problems and significantly reduce machining time in non-ferrous thread processing
For the chip type, we recommend the general-purpose material type VBX.
As for the grade of chips (inserts), the standard stock product is only the general-purpose VBX.
VBX : General-purpose material grade (ultra-fine carbide + TICN coating) * Standard stock product
VTX : Stainless steel first recommendation (ultra-fine carbide + TiALN coating) * Made-to-order production
VK2 : Suitable for non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, heat-resistant steel, and titanium alloys (carbide non-coated) * Made-to-order
