answer
Tool selection for thread mill [ external thread ]
※Introduction
external thread and internal thread have different thread shapes. For example, in the metric thread, even if the angle of the mountain is the same, the cutting height of the top of the mountain is different. Therefore, it is not possible to machine external thread with internal thread tools. The reverse is also true. However, when machining pipe threads (PT, PF, etc.) in thread mills, external thread and internal thread tools can be shared.

Step (1) Check the size , pitch, and thread length of the thread to be processed.
Step (2) Check the workpiece material.

Tip
ThreadPro is a program creation tool for OSG's thread mills.
It greatly reduces the time and effort required to prepare the thread mill for processing.

What you can do with Thread Pro
- Creation of processing programs for thread mills
・Thread mill tool selection
・ Refer to the approximate processing time

In preparation for use in other processes, you can use the thread mill more widely by keeping the following points in mind.

(1) Check the size , pitch, and thread length of the external thread you want to process.
Determine how much tool diameter and under neck length you need for your thread mill.
In OSG's standard stock, the only tool for machining external thread is the chip type, except for pipes.
The solid type is compatible with special products.

・Tool diameter
One of the features of the thread mill is that it is possible to machine different size threads of the same pitch.
external thread When selecting a thread mill for machining, the range of selection is wider than in the case of internal thread , where the tool diameter is limited by the pilot hole diameter.

under neck length
The thread length that can be processed is as follows, taking into account the margin.
chip Type: Holder under neck length - 2 pitch

(2) Check the workpiece material.
Determine if the tool is suitable for the material you want to machine.

For chip formula, we recommend VBX, a general-purpose grade.
As for the chip (insert) grade, the standard stock product is only the general-purpose VBX.

VBX : General-purpose material grade (ultra-fine carbide + TICN coating) * Standard stock product
VTX : Stainless steel first recommendation (ultra-fine carbide + TiALN coating) * Made-to-order production
VK2 : Suitable for non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, heat-resistant steel, and titanium alloys (carbide non-coated) * Made-to-order
